One of the areas we worked was in the colonia near the city dump. A large number of people live in the surrounding area.
They collect metals, and glass to sell for recycling, to try and make a living for their families. they also collect clothing,
and shoes for themselves.
One scene that I have never forgotten was on my first trip to the dump. There was an elderly man pulling a small cardboard
box attached to a wire with a hook on the end. As he passed me I looked in the box to see what he had collected and there
were a couple of slices of tomatoe, lettuce, and a few strips of tortillas. He was collecting lunch.
Often we forget just how fortunate we are, and take our blessings for granted. That first trip to the Matamoros city
dump changed the way I viewed a lot of things.
